Curly Girl Review: it’s a 10

5611BF6E-9BAA-4B25-A742-CDF8F80BD1F8

With a name like “It’s a 10” you can’t help but have high expectations that you’re about to have a bomb wash and go. Am I right?! So did the product live up to its name you ask?

I had the chance to use this product twice before writing this review and the answer is yes! Just as the name states, it’s a 10! I loved my results. It defined my spiral curl pattern, while leaving my hair very soft and manageable. I love a product that can define my curls and still give me soft fluffy hair with no stiffness or “crunch.”

The two main reasons I was pleasantly surprised and won over by this product:

1. I’ve mentioned in previous posts how I prefer not to use hair styling creams on my first day hair as it tends to weigh down my curls. When I try out a cream on my wash day, I go into it not expecting any spectacular results. However, this styling cream proved me wrong! It was light weight, and gave me defined curls with a hold.

2. This was by far one of the easiest wash days I’ve had! My wash days usually consists of a mixture of products from washing to styling products. I call it my “curl cocktail” lol. With It’s a 10, I only had to use two products; one to cleanse and condition in one step and one cream for styling. With this one cream, I got the same great results compared to when I use a mixture of two to three styling products. That, I have to say was impressive. Especially because creams usually don’t work for me.

Take a look at my results!

Side note: Along with a well working product, a great curly cut can help advance the look of your curls as well! I have what’s called a RëzoCut (click on the link to see previous post on my first RëzoCut experience) done by Nubia at Utopia Day Spa & Hair Salon

Also, if you’re curious about how I dried my hair…I air dried it for about an hour, then finished drying it with a diffuser.

Until next review…thanks for stopping by! xo

My (updated) Wash and Go Routine

My go-to wash and go routine still includes DevaCurl, but I switched the product line up a bit. This routine has been responsible for most of my good hair days lately…so of course I had to share my new holy grail!

Step by step instructions:

1. Cleanse hair with DevaCurl’s No Poo followed by DevaCurl’s One Condition

2. A good deep conditioning can give your hair a major boost! I like to use DevaCurl’s Melt into Moisture. I apply it after washing my hair, afterwards I put a plastic cap and leave the treatment on for at least an hour.

3. After rinsing off the treatment, do not dry your hair with a towel. (If you apply the product while your hair is still very wet, it will result in more defined curls with less frizz). Split your hair into two parts and apply a little bit of the One Condition (I like to use it as a leave in). Use the raking method to evenly distribute it throughout your hair. Repeat on the other side.

4. Flip your head upside down and gently shake out the roots with your finger tips.

5. Scrunch DevaCurl’s Light Defining gel onto your hair. Keep scrunching the product onto your hair until your whole head of hair is saturated in the product. As you’re scrunching you’ll squeeze out some of the excess water. Also, squeeze and hold for a few seconds to help define your curl pattern.

6. Repeat the scrunching process again, but this time with DevaCurl’s B’Leave In gel

7. Scrunch and shake out your hair one last time. Then take a microfiber towel and  squeeze out all the excess water.

8. Shake out your hair and flip your head back up. You can now go ahead and create a part. I usually part my hair to the side but feel free to do a middle part or let your curls kind of fall into place.

9. Finally, you can air dry or use a diffuser to dry your hair. I prefer to air dry when I have the time.

Curly Girl Review: Rapunzel “The Future of Hair”

IMG_7926

Hey curl friends, who wants to know what hair products I used to achieve these awesome results?! I had the pleasure of trying out some great products from Rapunzel. The end results left me with soft and shiny curls.

I used the following products from the Rapunzel line:IMG_7935

Rapunzel’s Hair Silk: made to smooth ends, condition, and when used daily aids in minimizing breakage and damage caused by chemicals and heated styling.

I loved that this product helps to protect your hair from chemical damage, since I dye my hair often. This oil also gave my curls some amazing shine! You can clearly see the difference in the photo above. In the “before” photo my hair looks dry and dull versus the “after” photo where my curls look shiny, moisturized, and even glisten in the light.

Rapunzel’s Hair Lotion: A deep moisturizing cream made with Shea Butter and other natural oils that promote healthy hair growth while protecting the hair from damage.

I was amazed how soft this cream left my hair…and when I say soft I mean SUPER-DUPER soft! (yes, I said super-duper I had to emphasize on how soft my tresses were! lol)  My comb and fingers literally glided through my hair, melting away any signs of knots that were ever there. It also did a great job at adding moisture to my hair and making it more manageable.

Rapunzel’s Hair Therapy: Hair multivitamins that help prevent hair loss and breakage from occurring.

I have been taking these vitamins consistently for a few days now and I believe I will see results. These vitamins contain a perfect dose of iron, which is an important ingredient when trying to promote hair growth because it carries oxygen to your roots.

Here are some more “after” photos…just because who can resist taking selfies when your new hair products are giving your hair LIFE!…haha.

What do you guys think of my results? I loved the outcome, whats not to love about healthy, silky, and shiny looking curls! If you’re interested in seeing a step by step on how I applied the product press play in the video below:

Curly Girl Review: Madonna & Co Miracle Hair Gel

miracle gel

A curly girl can never have too many hair styling products! Today, I’m sharing my results after using Madonna & Co’s new Miracle Hair Gel. For those of you who are not familiar with Madonna & Co, it’s a boutique and beauty bar. It’s a place that brings together beauty and fashion all under one roof. Although their beauty bar deals with all hair types and textures, they do specialize in curly hair. With that being said, they have created a new miracle gel formula to target frizz.

I was lucky enough to try their new product. I received a small sample size bottle of the Miracle Hair Gel. Because I wanted to see it’s true affect on my hair, and knew the small bottle would not be enough to distribute evenly all through out my hair, I decided to test it out on a smaller section of my hair. I made sure to apply the product in my hair while it was still very wet after washing, I then let it air dry. After it was a hundred percent dried I was able to compare and see the results. The gel had given me nice “S” shaped curls (or ringlets, which ever phrase you prefer). I had VERY nice curl definition with minimum frizz, which I loved! The gel had a light hold and didn’t weigh my hair down at all, nor did it leave my hair stiff but rather soft.

Take a look at how I used the Miracle Hair Gel and the final results:

1. I parted a small section of my hair and washed that section, getting it all ready for the product.

IMG_3489

2. I applied the gel on my hair and then combed it through with a wide tooth comb to help distribute the product throughout my hair.

image2 (6)image1 (4)

3. I then scrunched my hair upwards towards the roots. (Because I apply the product on my hair while it’s still very wet, it is normal to see the product all in between your fingers). I continue to scrunch and hold a few more times.

IMG_3495

4. I used a cotton t-shirt to squeeze out any excess water.

5. Then I just waited around until my hair dried…meanwhile take a look at what my curls looked like right after applying the gel:

Curly Girl Tutorial & Review: Camille Rose Naturals

Hello everyone! Sorry I’ve left you guys hanging and been M.I.A on my blog for a while. BUT, the important thing is I’m back in action and I have some new tutorials and reviews for you guys! Today, I’m reviewing the new line for Camille Rose Naturals. If you remember, I reviewed some of their products once before and was a fan (click here to check it out)…so I was excited to try out their new stuff! My package from Camille Rose Naturals included the following:

IMG_5744.JPG

  • Sweet Ginger Cleansing Rinse with Castor & Aniseed oil.
  • Aloe Whipped Butter Gel with Aloe Vera & Macadamia Oil
  • Coconut Water Leave-In Detangling Hair Treatment

Now keep scrolling for a tutorial and my final thoughts on the new line…

c.rose3

So first thing’s first…get your wash on! (p.s. don’t mind my bare face and puffy eyes, I was a little sick this past weekend. And some of the blurry pics are do to my steamy shower haha). First, I washed my hair with the Sweet Ginger Cleansing Rinse. Start at your roots as you scrub your scalp, working your way down to the ends of your hair. Then I used my Camille Rose Naturals Coconut Water Penetrating Hair Treatment to condition my hair. I like to split my hair into two parts, and work the product through each half using a wide tooth comb to detangle along the way. After I’ve gotten all those pesky little knots out, I put a shower cap and leave the conditioner on for 15-30 minutes then rinse it off completely.

c. rose

As for styling, while my hair was still soaking wet I parted it in half. Then applied the leave in conditioner and combed it through with a wide tooth comb. I repeated the same steps on the other half. Finally, I took a scoop of the Aloe Whipped Butter Gel and scrunched it upwards into my hair and continued to scrunch my hair all over. With the butter gel, a little goes a long way so be careful not to apply too much as you don’t want to weigh your hair down (That is, if you have the same hair type as myself. If you have thicker hair go ahead and apply a little more). Once you’re done scrunching your life away..haha flip that head back up! and now you just wait while your hair air dries. You can opt for a diffuser on the cool setting if you want to speed up the drying process.

Anddd… here are the final results after waiting for it to air dry, and a little blast of cool air from the diffuser:

IMG_5693IMG_5736IMG_5714

The Aloe whipped butter gel elongated my curls, giving me more of a looser curl versus a tighter curl to show off more of my length. It’s nice to have the option to switch it up and give your curls a slightly different pattern. This product did not leave my hair stiff but nice and soft just the way I like!

Here’s my final thoughts on this product line:

Once again my FAVORITE thing about this line is the scent! Mmmm…everything smells so sweet, I have to keep reminding myself I can’t eat my hair. HAHA…what can I say I have a major sweet tooth! All jokes aside, this has to be by far my favorite scent out of all my products. Which is important to me since my hair is on my head and close to my nose (duh, you can now confirm I passed pre-k lol). My point is all day long I can smell my hair, so I hate it when I use a product that isn’t so appealing when it comes to the smell. Besides, don’t you just love it when the person next to you says out loud how tropical you smell and you’re just like thanks that would be my hair (does hair flip) hehe. Other than the scent, I loved that the rinse is sulfate-free and is infused with all these natural ingredients for moisture retention and slip. I really loved the Coconut Leave-In Hair Treatment. I always like to leave a little of conditioner in my hair after I wash, so this was perfect…it left my hair knot free and quite soft. As for the Aloe Whipped Butter Gel, I like how a little goes a long way with this product. Which is always a plus, because it means you get more for your money. It’s not something you have to keep constantly buying as its sure to last you a long time, and you can even use it for your more polished up-dos!

My Curly Hair Regimen

What’s your hair routine?…What products do you use? has to be the most frequently asked questions when it comes to my hair. Well, my curly headed friends the secret is out!! This is way over due, but I am FINALLY giving you guys my step by step hair regimen. That’s right, you’re getting ALL the juicy details! So who’s excited to find out how I keep these golden curly tresses tamed?! …keep those fingers scrolling to find out!

(Before we get started, I would like to clarify that this is my natural curl pattern and this routine is what I use to enhance and tame my curls. Keep in mind that not everyone has the same curl type, so please do not be discourage if you do not achieve the same results. I am sharing my curly hair routine to simply inspire you to find your perfect curl).

Step #1: First I wash my hair with DevaCurl’s No-Poo. I concentrate more on the roots, making sure to scrub my scalp to loosen up any residue. When I am done scrubbing away, I move on to conditioning my hair with DevaCurl’s One Condition. Once I have applied the conditioner, I part my hair in half and start to finger detangle each section, adding more conditioner if needed. (note: if you are not about that finger detangling life, the next best thing to use would be a wide tooth comb to detangle your hair). After I finish getting all those pesky little knots out, I wash off the conditioner. BUT, I make sure not to fully rinse it out, as I like to leave a little conditioner in my hair. Then, once I’m done washing my hair and out the shower, I squeeze just a little of the excess water out. And I do mean it when I say just a little! I like to apply the product while my hair is some what soaking wet. (Here’s a tip: if you’re in a rush and want to speed up the drying process go ahead and dry your hair with a cotton t-shirt instead of a towel. This will eliminate frizz).

Step #2: While my hair is wet, I sporadically spray DevaCurl’s Set it Free mist throughout my hair.

Step #3: I apply a small amount of One N’ Only Argan Oil starting from the root to ends, combing it through with my fingers (Be careful not to apply too much as it will make your hair too greasy. With this product a little goes a long way).

Step #4: At this point, I grab my handy dandy Light Defining Gel from DevaCurl. First, I take a few pumps of the gel and smooth it onto my hair, from root to ends. I then flip my head upside down and let those tresses hang! While my head is flipped over, I take a few more pumps of gel and with a scrunching motion, I apply the gel onto my ends. I keep scrunching more gel onto my hair, working my way up all the way to the roots. I repeat this step until I feel I have evenly distributed the product all throughout my hair. When I’m all done applying the gel, I keep my head flipped upside down and go back to scrunching the heck out of my hair! (lol). I like my hair to be at its curliest state, so scrunching like crazy will help spring those bad boys right up!

Step 5: After I’m done applying all my products, I slowly flip my head upwards. Now, I just wait for my hair to air dry which takes FOREVER! If you’re in a rush you can go ahead and use a diffuser to speed up the drying process (I prefer to let it air dry). Lastly, after my hair is fully dried I flip my head upside down again and do one more round of scrunching. This removes the “cast” aka the stiffness created by the gel.

That’s all folks! That was my step by step curly hair regimen. Although, I do like to switch it up and experiment sometimes. I have other curly hair routines that consist of using different hair products that I like (I’ll share with you guys another time ;). However, this is my go-to routine. I can always depend on it when I don’t have the time to experiment or can’t risk not getting good results.

Until next time! XO

Curly Girl Review: Carol’s Daughter Marula Curl Therapy

Hello fellow curly gals (and guys)! Are you on the hunt for that perfect styling product that will leave you with soft bouncy curls? Well you can stop the experiments with the various hair products that don’t do the trick. I have done the experimenting for you! I’m excited to share this product with you guys, I found it to work GREAT! So I just had to share with all the curly headed folks out there!

IMG_4420

Todays “Curly Girl Review” is about the Carol’s Daughter Marula Curl Therapy line, which include the following products: Marula Curl Therapy Softening Hair Mask, Marula Curl Therapy Gentle Cream Cleanser, Marula Curl Therapy Softening Serum, and Marula Curl Therapy Diffusing & Styling Lotion. I wanted to use these products a few times before reviewing it, as sometimes in my experience the second or third time is the charm. However, with this line of products, I fell in love with it the first time around! The softening serum and diffusing & styling lotion exceeded my expectations. I applied it last minute to my semi dried tresses, when I usually apply the product while my hair is still soaking wet so that my curls come out more defined versus frizzy. To my surprise the results were still awesome, even though I had applied the product on semi dry hair! That alone made me love it! (flips hair). It also exceeded my expectations because I usually don’t diffuse my hair, I prefer to let it air dry. However, this specific line of products were made in mind with the combination of a diffuser to create beautiful defined curls…so I was up for trying a new way to style my curls. I absolutely loved the outcome, and even more when I tried it again, this time applying it as I usually do when my hair was fully wet for a more defined look. I usually like when my curls curl up to their most curliest potential, leaving me with a head full of curls on the tighter side. But with this product my results were more of a stretched out curl, they weren’t as tight as I usually rock them but it still looked GREAT! I liked how it gave me a different curl pattern giving me more options on styling a basic wash and go. I love how versatile curly hair could be, and loved how these products helped me achieve that. With the stretched out curl, it gave me a little less shrinkage, making my tresses look long even while curly. I simply loved the way my hair looked after styling it with the products and lightly diffusing it. Here are the steps I took to achieve my soft and bouncy curls:

1. I washed my hair with the Marula Curl Therapy Gentle Cleanser.

2. After rinsing off the cleanser, I applied the Marula Curl Therapy Softening Hair Mask and left it on for about five to seven minutes before rinsing it off. (Leaves your hair nice and soft!)

3. Once I got out the shower I applied the Marula Curl Therapy Softening Serum onto my wet tresses. (I used about three pumps and finger combed it through out my hair, starting from the roots to ends).

4. Afterwards I put the Marula Curl Therapy Diffusing & Styling Lotion. (A little goes a long way with this product, you don’t have to put too much to get results). I flipped my head upside down and scrunched the product into my hair.

5. After applying all the products, I let my hair air dry for a little before blasting the diffuser. Once I let it air dry a bit, I then used the diffuser on low heat. And voila!…a head of big, soft, bouncy curls were revealed! (If you have some unwanted frizz, just go ahead and add another pump of the softening serum and it will help get rid of some of that extra frizz. But a little frizz is okay, go ahead and work it girl!)

Take a look at my results after styling my hair with the Marula Hair Therapy products:

In all, I would definitely recommend this product line. It is by far one of my favorite Carol’s Daughter line of hair products! And not to mention, I received so many compliments on my hair when I used these products (that’s always a plus!…hehe). You can purchase this line of products at CarolsDaughter.com

Curly Girl Review: Camille Rose Naturals

Calling all curly gals and naturalistas…I’m back with a new hair product review! I couldn’t wait to share the results for Camille Rose Naturals hair product with you guys…It’s been long over due! If you’re looking for a product that gives you a soft curl and some bounce, you’ll definitely want to read on…

CRN products(These are the products from Camille Rose Naturals I used to wash and style my hair.)

I started with the conditioner, which was amazing! The aroma alone will make you fall in love as soon as you open it. It has a tropical coconut scent that smells SO GOOD! (yes…that called for capital letters, I want you guys to understand it really smells really, really good!) My boyfriend confirmed how great it smelled when he walked into the bathroom as I was applying the rinse out conditioner and yelled out “Wow!…whatever you put on, it smells amazing!” (haha). The smell wasn’t the only thing that earned two thumbs up. The packaging says “rinse out conditioner for silky, soft hair” well they sure did deliver! I put the conditioner on and left it on for a few minutes, I then went ahead and finger detangled my hair while the conditioner was still on. It has so much slip, it made it easy to slide through those little knots…and not to mention a little of this product goes a long way! After rinsing it out, you can actually feel a difference in how soft and silky your hair feels. My fingers glided right through my tresses, I loved the outcome!

As for styling, I used only a little of the curlaide moisture butter. As I mentioned in an earlier post, I don’t like to use too much of styling butter as it weighs my hair down…so I put just enough to give my hair some moisture and define the curl a little more.  After, I applied a few pumps of the curl maker. As I let my hair air dry, I did find it to start getting a little hard or “crispy.” But after scrunching my hair a few times with my cotton t-shirt, it broke that “cast” and left me with super soft curls that were defined and my curls were really…well curly!

Take a look at my results:

I loved the outcome of my curls! Visit www.camillerosenaturals.com to find any of these products I used in this post. Also don’t forget to follow me on instagram @style-dose for more hair tips as well as @camillerosenaturals

How To Achieve Voluminous Hair Without Heat

As a curly girl, I try not to use any heat on my hair in order to avoid heat damage. However, every now and then I get the itch to blow out my curly locks. Technically, you shouldn’t use any heat on your curls in order to maintain healthy curly locks. I believe if you do it only once in a blue moon and take proper care of your hair, it won’t cause major damage. Besides, isn’t the versatility of having curly hair one of the biggest perks of being a “natural” ?! You get the best of both worlds…you can go from big curly hair to a sleek straight do and the options don’t end there!

When I straighten my hair, I prefer to have some body versus pin straight hair. There was one little problem with that…the more volume and body I wanted, the more heat I had to apply to my hair. When I used to straighten my own hair, I would use a curling iron afterwards to give my hair a little body and bounce. Once I started taking better care of my hair and tried cutting out using as much heat as possible, I had to come up with ways to create voluminous hair without using heat appliances on my tresses. That’s when I came up with my new hair routine to achieve voluminous hair. Keep scrolling to see how I do it!

volume pictorial

After you straightened your tresses, follow the steps below:

1. Split your hair into four even sections. Clip three of the sections, to keep them from getting in the way while you work in one section.

2. Grab about an inch of hair and with your fingers start rolling that piece as if you were putting it into a roller securing it with two bobby pins, one on each side (start from the bottom, rolling it up towards your scalp).

3. Repeat step 2 until you rolled up every piece of hair in each section. I usually do this right before bed and go to sleep with it. You can choose to do the same or you can do this throughout the day before heading out or while you get dressed and do your makeup. The longer you leave the rolls in the more body you will achieve. Once you unpinned your hair, go ahead and run your fingers through your hair to loosen up the curls and spray a little hairspray if you choose (but just a little, you don’t want it to be too stiff).

Here’s what my tresses look like after I take out the rolls:
