Hey guys! I was recently invited for a curly cut by Utopia Salon & Day Spa Owner and Master Curly Stylist Nubia Suarez. I wanted to share my experience at the salon with you all. Utopia Salon & Day Spa is a full service salon located in Westfield, NJ and one of their specialties is servicing curly girls and guys. I am a Jersey native, so I was especially excited to find out there was a salon that catered to curls in Jersey. I usually take a trip to NYC for such services. I was also excited to share this location with all my fellow Jersey curly girls, as I often receive questions on where to go in Jersey for curly cuts or styling.
I’ll admit I was a bit nervous at first to visit a whole new hair salon and curly stylist, but I did some research before hand and checked out some of Nubia’s work. I liked what I saw, so I decided to go for it! And I’m SO GLAD I did!!! It was all positive vibes from the minute I walked in! Upon arrival your greeted by a sweet and friendly receptionist and offered your choice of a mimosa, juice, coffee, or water. I’ll have a mimosa please! (Hashtag I love me some mimosas! haha). I think little things like that show that the establishment wants their customers to feel special and makes the customer’s experience as a whole a little more enjoyable. Not to mention you feel like you get a little more bang for your buck…Cheers to that! It was really busy when I arrived, with all type of clients. However, the receptionist still managed to acknowledge every client that walked in. Even if she couldn’t get to you right away she made sure to greet you and let you know she would be right with you. I only include this piece of information because, well as we all know first impressions are important. As a new client, the fact that I felt welcomed and comfortable as I walked in, set the mood for the rest of my experience at the salon.
I was then finally introduced to Master Curly Stylist, Nubia. She was so welcoming and sweet. We spoke about what I liked and didn’t like about the shape of my hair before starting the process. I could tell she had a true love for styling curly hair and that it was her ultimate goal for each client to leave her salon happy and in love with their locks. We spoke curly talk, we laughed, shared some stories and before I knew it, she had my curls all shaped up and ready for the styling process. As I laid back and let her wash and style my curly locks, I couldn’t help but notice the interactions between Nubia and her clients and co-workers. She knew all her clients by name, as they came up to her and greeted her with hugs and kisses. She also showed a lot of knowledge in hair products and curl texture as she instructed her co-workers which products, hair dryers, and curly technique to use for each client. Every curly girl in that salon had a styling process catered to their specific curl pattern. It proved that she was dedicated to curl care and styling.
In all, it was a wonderful experience. I’m so glad she provided me with the opportunity to see her work first hand and have her work her magic on my curly tresses. Nubia was so sweet and humble, knowledgeable, and was nothing short of hospitality! I would definitely recommend this salon, I myself will be visiting again!
